The abbreviation UFO means "unidentified flying object" without any further excess of meaning concerning origin or form of such an object. Synonymous or supplementary, the term UAP (unidentified aerial / atmospheric phenomenon) is used.
We perceive a UFO as "[…] the reported perception of an object or light seen in the sky or upon the land the appearance, trajectory, and general dynamic and luminescent behavior of which do not suggest a logical, conventional explanation and which is not only mystifying to the original percipients but remains unidentified after close scrutiny of all available evidence by persons who are technically capable of making a common sense identification, if one is possible." (Hynek, J. Allen: The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry. Chicago: Henry Regnery, 1972, p. 10)
The UFO phenomenon - the existence of UFOs as defined above, including all resulting personal, social and scientific consequences - can be studied by scientific means. This highly interdisciplinary research is currently not institutionalized in Germany. Interested people work in individual and cooperative projects as well as in registered associations to gain scientific insight into the UFO phenomenon. Most of the work is devoted to investigations of UFO sighting cases as well as to monitoring UFOs for registration and measurement purposes.
The German Cooperation Initiative UFO Research is the result of several efforts in the last years to establish a permanent cooperation between the three biggest non-profit organization in German-speaking countries:
- German-speaking Society for UFO Research, reg.assoc.: DEGUFO
- Society for Research into the UFO Phenomenon, reg.assoc.: GEP
- Society for the Scientific Investigation of Anomalous Atmospheric and Radar Phenomena, reg.assoc.: MUFON-CES
To fulfil scientific requirements in this cooperation, principles of good scientific practice for research into the UFO phenomenon have been developed collectively. Further cooperative projects are the use of a joint questionnaire during qualitative interviews with UFO experiencers as well as a collective archive of sightings and case investiations in the publicly available UFO database.
Through this website we intend to provide further information about our cooperative projects in UFO research in German-speaking countries. All information will be made available in German and English, which will be supplemented with links to available material in print or on websites of the participating organizations.
